Safe and Efficient Peripheral Venous Access, presented by Paul Lee, at Rocialle11th July 2014
Paul Lee, Medical Devices Training Manager, ABM University Health Board and Chairman of NAMDET UK (National Assoc. of Medical Device Educators & Trainers) spoke to an audience of clinicians about why and how a peripheral cannula care bundle had been implemented in ABM University Health Board’s hospitals.
During an informative and amusing presentation, Paul first highlighted the importance of making improvements, referencing Wales wide data which showed that 41% of patients had peripheral cannulae in situ, of which 1.6% suffered infections.
The care bundle comprises guidance documents, training materials and forms which when completed evidence that the correct procedures have been used, and ensures the keeping of appropriate notes regarding the care the patient has received. Also, Paul drew upon a personal experience regarding the care received by a member of his family to illustrate that the patient may experience pain before signs of phlebitis are present, though they may be reluctant to volunteer this information unless asked.
Above all, Paul made it clear that the adoption and maintenance of best practice is crucial to the reduction in the number of infections associated with peripheral venous access. Initial findings from a study Paul has just completed showed that adherence to agreed practices is greatly improved by the use of a cannula insertion pack that contains all of the items needed for peripheral venous access.
Paul’s presentation generated much discussion and feedback from the clinicians present and was the main feature of a day that also gave healthcare providers the chance to learn more about Rocialle and tour the company’s facilities.
