Rocialle walks to raise awareness of Sepsis

25th May 2016

According to figures from the UK Sepsis Trust, every year in the UK there are 150,000 cases of sepsis, resulting in 44,000 deaths. This is greater than the number of deaths attributed to bowel, breast and prostate cancer combined. Sepsis occurs when the body’s systemic response to a microbial infection causes damage to its own tissues and organs. It can lead to shock, multiple organ failure and death. Early recognition and prompt treatment are vital to successful patient outcomes. The low level of awareness of sepsis is both surprising and frightening.

To raise awareness of this terrible condition and funds for The UK Sepsis Trust, on Sunday, thirty-eight Rocialle employees walked a fifteen mile route from the Royal Glamorgan Hospital to Rocialle’s headquarters in Mountain Ash. The Cwm Taf hospital is one of those trialling a new single-use sepsis box developed jointly by Rocialle, 1000 Lives Wales and Cwm Taf UHB.

Despite encounters with a spirited horse and a territorial, giant chicken, the walkers arrived, some of them sore and blistered, after an average of five hours walking. Some had taken it upon themselves to go that little bit further, taking a detour that provided additional fundraising opportunities in the pubs of Aberdare.

So far, the walk has raised around £1,500. Additionally, many of the walkers were surprised by the number of people that approached them with stories of loved ones that had suffered from sepsis. The discussion inspired by the walk may have been the most valuable result of a well-organized and successful event.
