New Report Increases the Estimated Costs of Sepsis2nd March 2017
Rocialle, the company behind SepsisBox, was proud to support The UK Sepsis Trust at their Portcullis House reception on Monday 20th February. At this event, the UK Sepsis Trust publicised the newly published report from the York Health Economics Consortium, which clarifies the immense challenge faced in tackling sepsis. The panel of speakers at the event included Sir Bruce Keogh, Tom Ray, and the Secretary of State for Health, the Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP.
The research shows that there are at least 250,000 cases of sepsis in the UK each year – at least 100,000 more than previously thought. Chief Executive of the UK Sepsis Trust, Dr Ron Daniels said “It’s sobering to learn that the issue is so much greater than previously estimated.”
The study found that:
Sepsis could be costing the UK economy up to £15.6 billion a year rather than the previously estimated £2.5 billion
£2.8 billion could be saved by improving sepsis care
Delayed diagnosis and treatment of sepsis patients is resulting in billions of pounds worth of lost productivity
At a previous Sepsis Trust event, Sir Bruce Keogh stated that “Sepsis is a severe and life threatening response to infection which can be really hard to spot in its early phases. It is often preventable if an infection is identified early. But even when it has set in, it may be turned around if treatment is started soon enough.” Here, he acknowledged that the time to act is now.
The Sepsis Six care bundle has been proven to reduce the relative risk of death by 46.6% when delivered to patients with severe sepsis within the first hour. Rocialle’s SepsisBox was created with NHS Critical Care Outreach specialists, to facilitate the early delivery of the Sepsis Six where and when it is needed. Ensuring all of the required components are to hand, and with a design that ‘walks’ the healthcare provider through the Sepsis Six pathway, SepsisBox empowers the closest healthcare provider to act immediately when sepsis is suspected.
